William Menger hired John M. Fries to be the architect of the hotel and J.H Kampmann to be the contractor of the hotel. Fries and Kampmann were both hired in 1858.Menger put an ad in San Antonio newspapers about his hotel, even during its construction. This hotel was constructed for $15, 712 and it officially opened to the people on February 1, 1859. But, on Monday, January 31, 1859, William hosted an open house for certain guests that he invited. The city of San Antonio was very excited about and really looked forward to this hotel’s grand opening. In September 1859, William Menger added 50 more rooms to the hotel, since it was usually always full and rooms were hard to come by.
